Launching 5G services in the country will take 5 years

In the briefing, PTA members informed that the 5G policy was formulated in 2017, and in June of this year, the Authority formulated the 5G framework. He said: "PTA released a framework for testing and developing future technologies in June 2019, especially the fifth generation wireless network in Pakistan."
He said that Zong Qinghou and other mobile phone operators subsequently contacted the authorities and sought permission for trial.

He further clarified that Zong Qinghou conducted a field test instead of a network test. He said: "5G technology has not been introduced at the commercial level, and Zong has no right to do so."

PTA members made it clear that the license granted to Zong is limited to a three-month trial period and cannot be used for commercial purposes. He further stated that the PTA is responsible for removing the concerns expressed by the relevant authorities and the competent authorities will do so.

Khokhar mentioned the advertisements about its 5G test put by Zong that the company has been banned from promoting the test. He added that a notice of "misleading" advertisements has been issued to Zong Qinghou.

Senator Shahzad Waseem said that all parties concerned should play a "transparency game" and provide equal opportunities for all.

Senator Kulsoom Parveen pointed out that Zong Qinghou had abused his permission to test 5G.

Khokhar said that this technology will have to face multiple challenges during its adoption, including spectrum availability. He pointed out that the issue of spectrum fees has not been resolved.

The impact of 5G on human health, methods, applications, security and infrastructure needs to be analyzed. He hopes that this technology can be applied before 2021.

He said: "So far, PTA is not ready to launch 5G technology."

The IT Minister directed PTA to participate in Senator Attique's decision on the cost of 5G spectrum.

Senator Attique Shaikh said that it would be better for the authorities if they lead the experiment. In this regard, PTA members said that the trial or operation of 5G is beyond the scope of authorization. He said that operators around the world are preparing themselves.

He said: “Since October 2017, all network operators have been arranging 5G tests.” He added that Telenor submitted an application for the test on July 23. On August 8, Pakistan Telecommunications Co., Ltd. (PTCL), and on July 31, Mobilink and SCO also submitted their trial applications.
