China and India said they had agreed to relieve new tensions at the Himalayan border during the conflict and take steps to restore "peace and tranquility" after a high-level diplomatic conference in Moscow.
Chinese Defense Minister Wang Yi and Indian Foreign Minister Jazanka met in Moscow on Thursday and reached a five-point consensus, including that both sides believe that the current border situation is not in their interests. The two countries said in a joint statement that the military should immediately release and ease tensions.
A consensus was reached on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization meeting after clashes broke out on the western border of the Himalayas earlier this week.
After the news, China's defense company stocks fell on Friday, and the CSI Defense Industry Index fell 1.2%, and is expected to record the biggest drop since October 12, 2018 this week. I am willing. Tongyeong Heavy Industries shares fell 16.4%.
China and India accused each other of shooting into the air during the confrontation, which violated a long-standing agreement not to use firearms on sensitive borders.
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Friday that Wang told Jaisalkar during the meeting that “the top priority is to immediately stop provocations such as firing and other dangerous actions that violate the commitments of the two countries.”
Wang also told Jashanka that all personnel and equipment crossing the border must be mobilized, and the border forces of both sides “must be disengaged quickly” in order to escalate the situation.
These remarks are in sharp contrast with the recent military performance of the Chinese military. "China Global Times" is an influential tabloid published by the official newspaper of China's ruling party. The Global Times reported on Wednesday that the People's Liberation Army (PLA) is transporting soldiers, bombers and armored vehicles to the border.
Chinese state media also recently reported on armed jumping exercises conducted by PLA paratroopers in Tibet.
The Global Times stated in an editorial published on Thursday night that any dialogue with India should be matched with a "state of readiness".
The newspaper said: "China must be fully prepared to take military action when diplomatic engagement fails, and its frontline forces must be able to respond to emergencies and be ready to fight at any time."
India is full of confidence in confrontation with China. It is not strong enough. If India is kidnapped by ultra-nationalist forces and continues to pursue its radical China policy, it will pay a heavy price. "
