YouTube has announced that it will be testing a beta version of its new TikTok rival in India.
YouTube will also compete with many local competitors that are vying to fill the gap after TikTok bans India.
At the time, India was TikTok's largest foreign market, with an estimated 120 million users.
YouTube shorts will limit the playback time of the video to 15 seconds, and the platform will provide creator tools similar to TikTok owned by the Chinese.
Due to increased border tensions between the two countries, India banned TikTok and 58 other Chinese apps in June.
How does TikTok grow to 800 million users?
Chris Jaffe, vice president of product management at YouTube, said in a blog post that the shorts are "for creators and artists who just want to use their mobile phones to shoot short and engaging videos."
The new platform has a multi-segment camera that can string multiple video clips together, and has speed control, timer and countdown functions to avoid hands-free recording.
The shorts also give users the option to use music for recording and access the song library.

Jaffe says the shorts will expand to other markets as the product improves and new features are added.
YouTube's latest product announcement came after American technology company Oracle confirmed that TikTok owner ByteDance had officially proposed to become a "trusted technology partner" in the United States.
The purpose of this deal is to prevent President Donald Trump from threatening to shut down US apps due to national security issues.
Mr. Trump suggested that the Chinese government could access user data under the current arrangements.
The Indian government also raised similar concerns when it banned applications in June.
The Indian ban was announced after a clash in the Ghalvann Valley on the Himalayan border between China and India.
